How many artist are unknown due to the fact they create art for art's sake? As with any unknown, it is impossible to tell how many artists do not care to participate in art shows, enter competitions and so forth - they are only interested in creating art for reasons such as "creating art for their own enjoyment" whether others get to view it or not. One should ask, how can society get these reclusive artist out in the open so we all can enjoy their work!

When we think of art, do we only think of portraits, landscapes and still life? Hope not, for there is much more to art than these areas. The figure has been a part of art since the beginning of time. One of the biggest classes in the art schools is figure drawing.
Is the figure that important to artist? Yes and no!
Yes, it has much to do with perspective, line, mass and space. Drawing arms and legs especially of a reclining nude require the ability to foreshorten the objects so the perspective is correct. Drawing the head and torso require understanding form, line and mass.
No, because the same aspects of drawing and painting are used in creating landscapes and still life.
So what do we benefit from figure drawing over other subject matter? Your comments are welcomed!

Art is what art is! In other words it is different things to different people. What one sees in a work of art may not be shared by others. So each of us decides what we consider art. However, each of us should be open to other views, let's not be mioptic!
